- Security features of the Transition Networks Point System SNMP Agent: Transition's Focal Point SNMP management platform was designed with several levels of security to ensure that your network is accessible only to those who are authorized. Telnet, HTTP, and SNMPv1, the standard protocols used by the Point System SNMP Agent, are inherently insecure. However, the Agent has a set of proprietary security features that will prevent access by all but the most sophisticated, determined intruders. Passwords / Community Names: "Community Name" is synonymous with "password" in SNMPv1 parlance. Nearly all SNMP systems (including the Point System) have at least two Community Names, each providing a distinct set of read and write privileges. A particular set of privileges is known as a "MIB View." Most systems have a "Private" Community Name whose MIB View includes read-write access to all MIB Variables, and a "Public" Community Name whose MIB View is read-only and is sometimes restricted to a smaller set of MIB variables. FIREWALL:Versions of the Point System Agent published after November, 2001 contain an internal IP filter that can be configured through the CLI command FWALL. Each rule entered into the IP filter matches packets based on source IP address, destination protocol, destination port, or some combination of the three. Each rule also contains a "drop" or "pass" action, making it possible to configure the filter with either a "default accept" or a "default deny" philosophy.
